I've loved getting to know my on city (Portland, OR) better with this app but I've gotten to use it in London this summer. Don't want to pay for tours? Just convince a friend to take a tour, they get the first one free and you get an extra besides. Also you can do tours with people and only one of you has to buy the tour. You do it at your own pace and spend as long as you want in that store/park/cool bar you discover...unlike if you're on normal tours you go at your pace.

Highly reccomend Detour. Learned a lot about the history of Gettysburg. I loved that I could do the tour at my own pace. I also liked that I could listen through the app on my phone while walking the stops.

I tried this for the first time in London and really loved the combination of personal stories, area history and local knowledge. The guides were knowledgeable people who grew up in the areas of the tour which made it more like you were touring with a friend than a guide. It was easy to follow along, the app provides maps and photos so you know exactly what they are taking about. I will definitely do these again and am even interested in doing some in my own city. Looking forward to them adding more cities.

Amazing tours; awesome technology --- I take detours as often as I can when I'm in a city that has them!
  • Great way to learn about the less touristy side of Rome!

On my recent trip to Rome, I completed three of the Detour walking tours - on the Jewish Resistance during Nazi Occupation, Modern Italian Politics, and The Fall of Rome. I enjoyed each of these immensely, and appreciated how they showed a side of Rome, it's ancient and contemporary history, that I wouldn't otherwise get to experience and learn about as a tourist. I love how the tours are narrated by a person who was present and significant for the period (even if played by an actor), the sound design and how immersive it made the walks, and how the walks took me to places, and made me notice things I would have missed otherwise. Looking forward to checking out some others of these tours closer to home.

What an amazing experience. I highly recommend Detour. It's Very easy to use, not expensive and really fun and interesting. If you want to tour a city either alone or with a few people, this is the way to go. The tours are very simple to use. You go to the start location and then follow the clear simple directions and as you walk along the history of that area is told to you in an interesting and fun way. Suggestions are made to try local pubs or coffee shops or just to take a moment in a park or an area of local interest and the tour waits for you, so you can go at your own pace. Wonderful. You have to try it

The audio tour was pretty cool, with the detailed direction and even a built in compress/direction guide, the tour was easy to follow. We learns much from the tour. Our guide was funny too, telling us the smell in the alley is expected and the journey will be worth it. We feel we learned a lot without spending too much from a live guide. Will plan to buy more in the future.
