I first started using Thumbtack for my Photography business in 2013 and they quickly became a very important part of my business. I was working 3-6 jobs a week from Thumbtack for years. I currently have booked over 250 clients from the site and have a 150 five star reviews. Long story short they have changed their business model. They no longer allow you to have templates when you respond to customers, they send the same basic info... Pricing, hours, etcetera to everybody...removing your ability to negotiate prices. They used to allow only 5 people to respond to leads, now up to 15 can.
They used to charge you around $8 for a typical lead. Now it's up to $36 in some cases and they want everybody to switch to this Pro assist set up where they charge you 15 to $20 for every customer who contacts you. The customers contact you asking you the questions that were always included in your template! So every time I customer messages you and says "are you available on my date", Thumbtack charges you 15 to $20. To add insult to injury Thumbtack has you fill out a calendar with your schedule so they know who to send your responses to but they don't let you tell the customer that you're available on their date when the customer receives your initial information!
I have booked 3 clients in the last two and a half months and I have spent over $1300 on leads since the last time I booked a client. I feel like I'm being scammed. It used to be an incredible service and I don't know if someone new took over the company or what is going on but all I do is throw money down the rabbit hole with them. They claim this new policy helps consumers choose more quickly from more pros, but clearly it has glutted the market with amateurs and is making Thumbtacks profits soar at the expense of experienced pros.

Just in update!!! Thumbtack going crazy! Allows up to 15 photographers at 1 request! This is just wrong, wrong, for us... if before there was only 30% chance to get hired, then now, I have less that 3% to get hired, because so much mess up!!! I'am spending so much money there and no longer be working with Thumbtack... I think they should care about they real customers (us, who pays them), but they are call customers - our customers!!! Ok, good luck with cheating people! I'am off... sad that I spent lot of money and time there to eat great reviews, become a a TOP PRO and finally have to leave beachside of new stupid rules every time!!!
I joined Thumbtack a few months ago. Since that time i had lots of issues coming up. I was thinking how to protect myself from fake requests that I paying for.... why thumbtack stopped returning money even if request has been canceled? ... (they think it's successful introduction.., but it's not), I paying $$ for every quote I make and sometime hot no jobs after spending 100-200$. So I think it would be fair if thumbtack charge % from the successful jobs. I don't mind to pay 20% from my job, but when I quote quote quote for days and got nothing... it's frustrating. And I agree with other review, why most of Job in photography 100-150$ . How thumbtack decide that this is a price for family photography for example... btw, it's great idea, I hired few people there too myself... love that you compare prices but still expensive as for Pro !

Thumbtack used to be a great app until all these cheap workers who don’t want to do jobs right, and think they can do any and every type of work and charge five dollars an hour. And customers that dont answer quotes that you have to pay for! And they get bombarded with 13 contractors! And thumbtacks so greedy used to allow max of 5bids was nice cause it allowed healthy competition, now 13!! Who in the hell wants 13 quotes and let alone has the time or competence to accurately access 13 contractors abilities and skills for the proper fit?!?
Sorry for the rant. But i dont want to call you. You are a business that operates under your own principles, and i dont expect you to change them. I have been with other contractors who called your office about the same problems and your customer service was polite but a 5yr old would realize the messg didnt get past the ear on that phone.

Very great service for pros
I was so worried when I started this journey with thumbtack that I was not going to build my business. But with the time needed to just wait things have turned around for the better. Hopefully in the near future thumbtack will be one of the many sources that keep my business thriving. As well as word of mouth.

Best lead program out there!
Thumbtack is affordable. It’s great to see the nature of the lead before having to pay for it, if you so choose. The verification process is and profile set up is great to distinguish my company from others.
The only issue I have is that the app doesn’t always work correctly. I often have to reset it as it won’t load from the main screen when I first clicked on the app. After that it’s just fine. Sometimes the notifications stay on there even though I don’t have any new notifications in the app. That’s a little frustrating.
So, if everything would work more fluidly as it should, I would give the app five stars hands down. Despite the glitches, I still almost gave it 5 stars but I would like for you guys to get some of these simple things right.
I highly recommend this app to anybody else with a business.
I have only been using thumbtack for about a month and I have to say that the recent updates are absolutely terrible. The user interface is messy and difficult to scan through.
Personally, I could care less about the automated checkboxes potential clients are clicking. If I know what they want, when they want it, and they actually take the time to give some information about who they are or what they are looking for (not a checkbox), I then consider sending a proposal. I’m not going to waste my time and money submitting proposals to open ended and nonspecific project requests.
There also needs to be a way for pros who have submitted proposals to close out the proposal and get refunded because it’s absolutely ridiculous how often people will post, get proposals, and then disappear. I would like to get them off my dashboard and move on. I also would like the option to cancel proposals I’m waiting to hear back from in the event that I find myself taking on too many at once.
Just some thought.
Kill the tags, kill anything with “not provided” showing up, just generally streamline this experience.
Great service and great app
We’ve been using Thumbtack for years now. It has lead to some solid leads for us. The app has made it easier to interact with the system so it does its job perfectly!
I signed up as business and can’t add picture so I can’t respond to quotes and I can get any support from app. As far as I’m concerned it was a waste of time
Not happy with new version
As soon as new update came out it have me more difficult to switch between messages (previous version with tabs was great ). Please return the previous version back.
